1961+ Gibson SG Special P90
PAGE STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION...
In 1959, the 1st generation SG Special (Image #3) was the 1st Gibson guitar to use the "SG" name, arriving as the double-cutaway successor to the single-cutaway Les Paul Special of 1955–’58 (Image #2). Note that the 1st generation SG was a still a thick bodied guitar without the pointy horns, and thin body which came with the 2nd generation of SG Specials in 1961 (Image #4)
History & Significance
In 1961, the 2nd generation SG Special introduced the more familar thin bodied, pointy horned version of the SG that was shared with the SG Standard and SG Custom. Although the body changed, the 2nd generation models retained the same dual Soapbar P-90 pickup configuration and wraparound bridge.
This bare-bones approach was designed for intermediate players as it had all the functionality of the SG Standard, with the biggest difference being equipped with P-90 pickups instead of humbucker™ pickups. Over the years, professional-level guitarists adopted the instrument due to its simplicity and unique voice, which P-90 pickups and a slab mahogany body evoke. A bound rosewood fretboard with dot inlays and an inlaid block Gibson headstock logo are the two other distinctions that separate the SG Special from the SG Junior. White button tuners maintain the understated look of the guitar while giving solid tuning stability.
The history of the P-90, the most versatile pickup ever made | Guitar World
- The P-90 was Gibson’s premium pickup from 1946 until 1957, and it was installed on everything from the most exquisite jazz guitars to lowly student models such as the Les Paul Junior. If you bought a Gibson electric during that era, a P-90 or two was part of the deal.
