The first mid-engine road car was the 1966 Lamborghini Miura (image #11), which was designed by Bertone, who also designed another mid-engine car in the Mach Five collection, the Bertone X/19.
Zora Arkus-Duntov, known as the "Father of the Corvette" unsuccessfully tried many times to make the Corvette a mid-engine car. In 1959 he championed development of the "CERV I" (Chevrolet Experimental Racing Vehicle), then in 1964, the "CERV II" (which sold for $1,100,000 in 2013) (Image #12), and finally the 1968 XP-880 Astro II (Image #13) which Zora proposed as the basis for the C3 generation Corvette. A full decade after Arkus-Duntov retired, GM Design was still pursuing mid-engined Corvettes including the 1986 Corvette Indy Concept debuting as the 1990 CERV III at the 1990 Detroit auto show. GM would churn through nine mid-engine designs before finally launching the first production mid-engine Corvette in 2020, the eighth generation C8 Corvette!
The mid-engine C8 was an instant hit, with orders requiring 1-2 years wait, with prices demanded over MSRP! Another metric showing the C8's desirability is demonstrated in its market prices. With only 5 model years out of the Corvette's 72 years of production, 3 of the top 6 most expensive Corvettes ever sold already belong to the C8 generation with the first C8 ZR1 sold for $3,700,000 in 2025, the first C8 Z06 also sold for $3,700,000 in 2022, and the first C8 Stingray sold for $3,000,000 in 2020.
